Chances are you have adware on your computer right now, maybe even spyware. You may not know what this means most people don’t’ know what adware is, how it got onto their computer, and what it does. Adware programs piggyback onto other programs; most people are infected when they download freeware or shareware off of the internet.
Most forms of adware are essentially harmless. Some are needed to make other programs run correctly. But some other forms of adware, called spyware, are dangerous for you to have on your system. These can allow a third party to access the data on your computer, or can track what you do on your computer.
You can’t adequately prevent adware from installing on your computer without the help. Your old and trusty antivirus program is likely insufficient. Just because it stops worms and viruses, this does not mean that it will recognize adware as a problem. And if it doesn’t it won’t stop it from installing.
For real protection from adware you’ll need a newer antivirus program that specifically targets both adware and spyware. You can also download or purchase an adware filter.
An adware filter is very useful for system security. Basically, this filter will uninstall any programs that have damaging adware in them, and will prevent new programs containing adware from being installed on your machine.
Sometimes your Internet Service Provider, or ISP, will provide an adware filter as part of your package; this type of filter activates when you go online. If you have this filter, though, you will still need to periodically upgrade your anti-adware programs and keep signatures up to date as well.
You will have to grant permission for installation, before adware can be installed on your computer. However, often the programs will trick you into clicking without realizing what you are agreeing to.
Think about it. Any program that is trying to sneak on your computer isn’t exactly being honest and up front. The links for these programs will often use trickery to get you to click on them. You need to be extra careful and attentive not to get taken while on the Internet. Never download any file that you don’t know where it came from, and only download software that is adware-free and comes from trusted sources.
