Can You Trust Freeware Awards?

It’s a known fact these days that most download sites will tag a piece of freeware as “awarded” for one specific purpose, and one purpose only!.   To get back-links!.

What are back-links?

Backlinks are where one website links back to another.   For example, let’s say a freeware site publishes a developers software.   Then, that site may hint to the developer that if they place a link to the freeware site on their own website their software will then be tagged with something like a “Five Star Rating” award, or something similar.

This means that when you browse those download sites and see various software listed with these awards beside them it’s very possible that they are not in fact worthy of such an award but have provided the download site with a back-link in return for an award that they can now place on their own site to show everyone how “good” their software is.

This is a terrible practice and one which FreewareBB does not employ.   They do offer a “featured” award, although this is given to software on it’s merits and given regardless of whether the developer links back or not.   A study some time ago by an actual freeware developer saw this person create a fake submission to multiple download sites where there was actually nothing but a whole load of nonsense in the submission itself, yet immediately the developer then started to receive emails that his submission had been awarded Five Star ratings, amongst other awards therefore proving that many download sites do not even bother to check their submissions before approval.

FreewareBB however use a 100% manual submission policy whereby they do not employ any form of automated listings but instead check each listing manually and have been known to reject more software than they actually list!.

FreewareBB is a safe freeware download site that scans all freeware and author URLs before accepting them. The site is completely free to use and even registration is 100% free!.
