Dutch Pop-Art Painter Herman Brood

Herman Brood (5 November 1946 – 11 July 2001) was a Dutch rock & roll junkie, media personality and painting artist. Initially a passionate musician who achieved his commercial highlight in the late 1970s reaching the US top10 with his single ‘Saturday Night’, and called “the Netherlands’ purest and only rock & roll star,” became a famous neo-psychedelic painter in the early 1990s.

Notorious for his extremely fast lifestyle of “sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll,” enfant terrible, Brood daily consumed two litres of liquor and five grams of speed (amphetamines). Herman committed suicide at the age of 54 by jumping off the Amsterdam Hilton Hotel’s roof, apparently caused by several unsuccessful efforts trying to kick his severe alcohol and drug addiction.

The rocker’s suicide only strengthened his controversial status and according to a organised poll celebrating fifty years of popular Dutch music, it was the most significant event in pop history.

While still performing almost daily live with his Wild Romance, Brood focused on his painting career as well and he became a popular character in the Amsterdam art scene. His often brightly-coloured paintings and graffiti-inspired screen prints are best described as pop-art.

Herman Brood achieved some commercial success by, for instance, (spray) painting murals in several public spaces in and around the Dutch capital. He managed remaining in the spotlight, by his numerous media appearances and by featuring in biographical documentaries such as Rock ‘n’ Roll Junkie in 1994.

The Groningen Museum opened in 2006 an exhibition dedicated to Brood’s life and work, including paintings, poetry, lyrics, and photographs by Anton Corbijn. The exhibit was themed on his atelier where most of the paintings were created. In the museum Brood’s atelier had been completely reconstructed. During the 90s, his atelier was positioned on a gallery’s second floor in the Spuistraat, Amsterdam. The studio has remained untouched since his tragic death in July 2001
